Mr. Frank J. Filipiak, 82, of Altoona died Thursday evening at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus.
He was born in Altoona, son of the late Joseph and Anna (Streechko) Filipiak. He married Ellen Margaret Oct. 1, 1947, in Berlin, Germany. She preceded him in death March 5, 1988.
Surviving are a daughter, Christina "Tina" Ann Manna; a granddaughter, Heidi Ann Filipiak; two grandsons, Christopher R. (Cheryl) of Chesapeake, Va., and John J. (Rachael) of Baltimore, Md.; great-grandchildren: Nicholas E. Feather, Amanda M. Filipiak and Brittaney E. Filipiak; a daughter-in-law, Rosina "Dolly" M. Filipiak of Altoona; and a special friend, Shirely Kovach. He was preceded in death by a son, Frank D., who died Oct. 19, 2007; a sister, Helenca; and a son-in-law, Tullio Manna.
He was a graduate of Altoona High School.
He retired as a brakeman/ conductor for Conrail. He served in the Air Force as a radio operator during WWII.
Mr. Filipiak was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, formerly SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church; a member of the Swiss Club; Fraternal Order of Eagles, Bellwood; St. Stanislaus Kostka Brotherhood, where he was a former officer; Duncansville VFW; Catholic War Veterans; the Bavarian Aid Society; and the Federation of Clubs.
Friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Stanley J. Krish Funeral Home Inc., 1204 17th St. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 12th Avenue and 20th Street, Altoona, by Father James D. Zatalava.
