John S. Waksmonski

John S. Waksmonski, 89, of Altoona, died Wednesday at his residence. John was born in Altoona, son of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Squashic) Waksmonski. 

Surviving is a sister, Anna D. Tiernan of Hollidaysburg; and several nieces and nephews. 

John was preceded in death by his sisters, Catherine E. Matulnes and Rose Marie Holland. 

He was a 1951 graduate of Altoona High School, and Penn state University in 1955.

John was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, Pennsylvania School Employee Retirement System (PSERS), Penn State Alumni Club, Nittany Lion Club, and Pennsylvania Association Retirement System (PARS).  He was also a member of the Wormleysburg VFW and American Legion 0827, Iaia Post.

He was a teacher for the West Shore School District for 31 years.

 John enjoyed playing baseball in Cuba and in the Florida winter leagues, he coached the West Shore School District baseball teams. He played on the Altoona High School team, the Kelly Federation League and City League. 

John served during the Korean war in the Navy. 

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2025, at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, 12th Ave. and 20th St., Altoona, by Monsignor Stanley Carson. 

Private committal at Sts. Peter & Paul Roman Catholic Cemetery, Altoona.
